From mangrove river safaris and Dutch-era forts on the southern coast to leopard safaris, misty tea hills, ancient royal cities, and four unhurried days on Trincomalee's golden beaches — our longest and most complete Sri Lankan journey.
After breakfast in Negombo, transfer by private vehicle to Galle, taking in rural countryside scenery and everyday village life along the way. En route, stop in Balapitiya for a guided boat safari through quiet mangrove channels, where tangled root systems shelter kingfishers, egrets, crabs, and fish, with local boatmen sharing folklore as you glide past.
Arrive in Galle for lunch at a restaurant inside the Fort, serving Sri Lankan curry rice and seafood specialties. Spend the afternoon wandering Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dutch colonial streets and architecture, before finishing at the Galle Lighthouse for sweeping ocean views.
Stay 1 night at a hotel in Galle. Any extra meals or refreshments may be ordered from the restaurant and settled the next morning before checkout.
A full day exploring the southern coast from your Galle base. Begin at Unawatuna Beach for swimming and sunbathing on its fine, clear-water shoreline. Continue to Weligama, one of Sri Lanka's most beginner-friendly surf spots, where a local instructor can take you out for a lesson.
In the afternoon, visit Mirissa Beach along with the Coconut Hill viewpoint and Parrot Rock, before driving back to Galle for the night.
Stay 2nd night at the same hotel in Galle.
Check out of Galle and travel to Kataragama. After checking into your hotel, head out on an afternoon jeep safari through Yala National Park — Sri Lanka's most celebrated wildlife sanctuary and one of the best places in the world to spot leopards, alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species across its scrub plains, lagoons, and rocky outcrops.
After the safari, visit the centuries-old Kataragama Temple, a multi-faith shrine rich in architecture and devotional atmosphere.
Stay 1 night at a hotel in Kataragama. Dinner and breakfast are included.
Leave Kataragama after breakfast, stopping at Tissamaharama to see the tranquil Tissa Lake before continuing to Koslanda. Hike to the Upper Diyaluma Waterfall, where you can swim across four natural levels and — for the adventurous — try waterfall jumping at the second tier.
Continue on to Ella, pausing en route at Ravana Waterfall, before checking into your hotel for the night.
Stay 1 night at a hotel in Ella. Dinner and breakfast are included.
A full free day to experience Ella at your own pace. Hike Ella Rock for a rewarding 2–3 hour climb with panoramic views over tea country (best done early morning), or take the easier 30–45 minute trail up Little Adam's Peak for sunrise or sunset views across the Ella Gap. Walk the iconic Nine Arches railway bridge and watch trains cross its colonial-era arches.
For adrenaline, try zip lining over the hills, guided rock climbing, or mountain biking through nearby villages. Refuel at Ella's well-loved cafés — Cafe Chill, Matey Hut, or AK Ristoro — or try local specialties like hoppers, kottu roti, and rice and curry. In the evening, unwind with live music at spots like UFO, Ella Gap Hotel, or The Cave.
Stay 2nd night at the same hotel in Ella.
Leave Ella by train for Haputale, riding one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated scenic rail journeys through rolling tea estates. Visit Lipton's Seat, the viewpoint where Sir Thomas Lipton once surveyed his tea empire, best enjoyed at sunrise, then tour the historic Dambatenne Tea Factory to see how Ceylon tea is made and sample a freshly brewed cup.
Energetic travelers can take the peaceful 3km hike through tea plantations to Adisham Monastery, a Tudor-style Benedictine retreat. Continue onward to Nuwara Eliya for the night.
Stay 1 night at a hotel in Nuwara Eliya. Dinner and breakfast are included.
Spend the morning exploring Nuwara Eliya's colonial character — Gregory's Lake, the historic post office, and the town's fruit, vegetable, and downtown markets, plus its well-known golf course. Depart toward Ramboda, stopping to see the Puna Ella and Ramboda waterfalls.
Continue to a tea factory and plantation tour, exploring how Ceylon Tea — among the world's most renowned, grown across regions like Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula, Uva, and Kandy — is cultivated and processed. Check into your hotel on arrival in Kandy.

Other highlights include the Bahiravokanda Vihara's towering white Buddha statue with panoramic city views, and the National Museum of Kandy. Round off the day browsing Kandy Market for spices and handicrafts, or visiting a gem shop for the region's famous gemstones.
Stay 2nd night at the same hotel in Kandy.
A day for hikers. Pack snacks and water for the Pettigala Hike, a hidden-gem trail roughly 1.5 hours from Kandy offering a moderate 4–5 hour round trip through forest, grassland, and rocky terrain, rewarded with sweeping views of the Knuckles Mountain Range.
Drive back to Kandy in the afternoon to rest.
Stay 3rd night at the same hotel in Kandy.
Leave Kandy after breakfast and head toward Dambulla. Stop in Matale to visit a Hindu temple, and — if you'd like — a spice and herbal garden to learn about Sri Lanka's traditional crops.
In Dambulla, visit the Cave Temple, established in the 1st century BCE and home to five caves containing 153 statues of the Buddha alongside murals depicting his life story. Stop by the Dambulla Economic Centre, one of Sri Lanka's largest vegetable markets, before lunch at Ariya Restaurant on the way to Sigiriya.
Stay 1 night at a hotel in Sigiriya. Dinner and breakfast are included.
Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock, the legendary 5th-century rock fortress and palace, taking in ancient frescoes, the iconic lion-paw entrance, and panoramic views over the surrounding jungle — your ticket also includes entry to the on-site Sigiriya Museum.

Head to Minneriya for a private jeep safari, renowned for one of Asia's largest elephant gatherings around the Minneriya Tank, alongside sambar and spotted deer, elusive leopards, and vibrant birdlife including peacocks.
Continue to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's second ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to explore its well-preserved palaces, temples, and intricately carved stone statues from the 11th–13th centuries. From here, drive onward to the coast at Trincomalee.
Stay 1 night at a hotel in Trincomalee. Dinner and breakfast are included.
Spend four nights based in Trincomalee, with time built in for relaxation as well as optional exploration. Unwind on Nilaveli Beach's soft white sand and turquoise water, the quieter Uppuveli Beach known for its sunrises, or the secluded Marble Beach. Snorkel or dive at Pigeon Island National Park's coral reefs and marine life, or explore WWII-era shipwrecks such as the SS British Sergeant and HMS Hermes.
Between April and October, boat tours offer some of Sri Lanka's best chances to see blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins. Visit the cliffside Koneswaram Temple inside Fort Frederick for sweeping ocean views, or the forest temples of Thiriyaya, Girihandu Seya, and Velgam Vehera.
